Time Travel Machine Outlined

A new concept for a time machine could possibly enable distant future generations to travel into the past, research now suggests.

Unlike past ideas for time machines, this new concept does not require exotic, theoretical forms of matter. Still, this new idea requires technology far more advanced than anything existing today, and major questions remain as to whether any time machine would ever prove stable enough to enable actual travel back in time.
Time machine researchers often investigate gravity, which essentially arises when matter bends space and time. Time travel research is based on bending space-time so far that time lines actually turn back on themselves to form a loop, technically known as a "closed time-like curve."

"We know that bending does happen all the time, but we want the bending to be strong enough and to take a special form where the lines of time make closed loops," said theoretical physicist Amos Ori at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. "We are trying to find out if it is possible to manipulate space-time to develop in such a way."
Many scientists are skeptical as to whether or not time travel is possible. For instance, time machines often are thought to need an exotic form of matter with so-called "negative energy density." Such exotic matter has bizarre properties, including moving in the opposite direction of normal matter when pushed. Such matter could theoretically exist, but if it did, it might be present only in quantities too small for the construction of a time machine.
Ori's latest research suggests time machines are possible without exotic matter, eliminating a barrier to time travel. His work begins with a donut-shaped hole enveloped within a sphere of normal matter.
"We're talking about these closed loops of time, and the simplest kind of closed loops are circles, which is why we have this ring-shaped hole," Ori explained.
Inside this donut-shaped vacuum, space-time could get bent upon itself using focused gravitational fields to form a closed time-like curve. To go back in time, a traveler would race around inside the donut, going further back into the past with each lap.
"The machine is space-time itself," Ori said. "If we were to create an area with a warp like this in space that would enable time lines to close on themselves, it might enable future generations to return to visit our time."
Ori emphasized one significant limitation of this time machine—"it can't be used to travel to a time before the time machine was constructed." His findings are detailed in the Aug. 3 issue of the journal Physical Review D.
A number of obstacles remain, however. The gravitational fields required to make such a closed time-like curve would have to be very strong, "on the order of what you might find close to a black hole," Ori told LiveScience. "We don't have any way of creating such strong gravitational fields today, and we certainly have no way of manipulating any such gravitational fields."
Even if time machines were technically feasible, the gravitational fields involved need to be manipulated in very specific, accurate ways, and Ori said his calculations suggest any time machine could be very unstable, meaning "the tiniest deviations might keep one from working. We need to explore the problem of stability of time machines further."
Theoretical physicist Ken Olum of Tufts University in Medford, Mass., who did not participate in this study, was skeptical concerning how this new model claimed to sidestep prior theoretical objections to time travel.
Still, Olum noted, "It's important if it's right—that there really is some kind of loophole. So this should be scrutinized very closely." The point of such work, he added, was to "expand the bounds of what's possible, what kind of things we can have and what kinds of things we cannot have."

Atom Smasher Could Be Used As Time Machine, Physicists Propose

In a 'long shot' theory, physicists propose that the world's largest atom smasher could be used as a time machine to send a special kind of matter backward in time.
The scientists outline a way to use the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a 17-mile long (27-km) particle accelerator buried underground near Geneva, to send a hypothetical particle called the Higgs singlet to the past.
There are a lot of "ifs" to the conjecture, including the major question of whether or not the Higgs singlet even exists and could be created in the machine.

"Our theory is a long shot, but it doesn't violate any laws of physics or experimental constraints," physicist Tom Weiler of Vanderbilt University said in a statement.
However, if the theory proves correct, the researchers say the method could be used to send messages to the past or the future.
Weiler and Vanderbilt graduate fellow Chui Man Ho describe their idea in a paper posted March 7 on the research website arXiv.org.
Elusive Higgs
The Higgs singlet is related to another theorized but not yet detected particle called the Higgs boson. This particle, and its related Higgs field, are thought to confer mass on all the other particles, and its discovery could help scientists answer the question, why do some particles have more mass than others?
The search for the Higgs boson was one of the main motivations for building the LHC in the first place. Since the atom smasher began regular operation last year, it has yet to find evidence of the Higgs boson, but the machine is still ramping up to its peak energies.

CREDIT: CERN
If the collider does succeed in producing a Higgs boson, some theories predict that it will create a Higgs singlet at the same time.
This particle may have a unique ability to jump out of the normal three dimensions of space and one dimension of time that we inhabit, and into a hidden dimension theorized to exist by some advanced physics models. By traveling through the hidden dimension, Higgs singlets could reenter our dimensions at a point forward or backward in time from when they exited.
"One of the attractive things about this approach to time travel is that it avoids all the big paradoxes," Weiler said. "Because time travel is limited to these special particles, it is not possible for a man to travel back in time and murder one of his parents before he himself is born, for example. However, if scientists could control the production of Higgs singlets, they might be able to send messages to the past or future."
M theory
The test of the researchers' theory will be whether the LHC shows evidence of Higgs singlet particles and their decay products spontaneously appearing. If it does, Weiler and Ho believe that they will have been produced by particles that travel back in time to appear before the collisions that produced them.
The theory is based on M-theory, a "theory of everything" that attempts to unite the forces of nature and describe everything in the universe. It's based on string theory, which posits that all particles are fundamentally made up of tiny vibrating strings.
Theoretical physicists have developed M-theory to the point that it can accommodate the properties of all the known subatomic particles and forces, including gravity, but it requires 10 or 11 dimensions instead of our familiar four. This has led to the suggestion that our universe may be like a four-dimensional membrane or "brane" floating in a multi-dimensional space-time called the "bulk."
According to this view, the basic building blocks of our universe are permanently stuck to the brane and cannot travel in other dimensions.
There are some exceptions, however. Some argue that gravity, for example, is weaker than other fundamental forces because it diffuses into other dimensions. Another possible exception is the proposed Higgs singlet, which responds to gravity but not to any of the other basic forces

Radiation Can Be Good For You

Let’s stop panicking about radiation. This message is aimed at my friend A. F. who told me to shut the windows despite the warmth of the morning. “I calculate that the radioactive death cloud from the Fukushima nuclear plant will arrive here by noon,” he explained.

I doubted that shutting the windows would provide enough protection, but I’m no expert, so I did as he told me. Around 11:50 p.m., he leapt to his feet and pointed through the glass. “There it is, right on schedule,” he said. I followed the line of his finger, and said: “That’s not a radioactive emission from Japan. That’s just a cloud.”

None of this surprised me. The main thing that happens after a disaster is that panic arises among people who enjoy that sort of thing. An hour later, A. F. claimed he could smell radiation. I pointed out that 1.) Radiation doesn’t have a smell, and, 2.) He lives above a hairdresser’s, a category of shop which always smell disgusting, because they use so many chemicals that the fumes combine into a lethal cloud way worse than Fukushima and closer to Bhopal.

Discussing this later at the bar, I was curious to learn from a self-described scientist that some boffins now think radiation is good for you. I retorted: “The residents of Hiroshima might disagree.” But then I remembered that I myself owned a historical document showing radiation having a positive effect: an April 1963 edition of The Amazing Spiderman.

The scientist clarified himself: Low level radiation is good for you. With his iPhone, he Googled several surveys which showed that radiologists, nuclear plant staff and airport security staff get fewer cancers than people in jobs with no exposure to radiation.

Most surprising was a recent study in Florida in which mice suffering from Alzheimer’s disease were given two hours of “talk time” on mobile phones (which emit low levels of radiation) every day for seven months. “Memory problems of the older Alzheimer’s mice disappeared,” researchers at the University of South Florida said.

Irritatingly, the report failed to answer the obvious questions. 1) How did they locate mice with Alzheimer’s disease in the first place? Did they hang out at mice apartments to see which ones remembered their door entry codes? 2) What did the mice talk about for two hours a day? 3) How did they know which mice had memory problems? Did they eavesdrop on their conversations? Mouse one: “My brain works perfectly again.” Mouse two: “Is that right?” Mouse one: “Is what right?”

The next day was so hot that A. F. reluctantly opened the windows, even though the Fukushima radioactive death cloud was running late. I told him not to worry. “There are lots of documents which indicate that low-level radiation has positive effects,” I said, handing him a reading list: Godzilla, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, the Incredible Hulk, the Daleks, etc. You can’t deny evidence like that.

I could have added that radioactivity has been scientifically proven to benefit mouse-sized brains, but I stopped myself. For several of my dear friends, that would have been a little too close to the truth.

Indonesia is set to host the 2011 SEA Games in the SEA Games Federation Council Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand 6 September 2006. This year is the fourth time for Indonesia to be host country for Southeast Asian countries sports festival after in SEA Games X 1979, SEA Games XV 1987, dan SEA Games XIX 1997.

As the main host, Palembang will concentrate the game in Jaka Baring Sports Complex which covers an area of 45 thousand square meters and also at the sports center Gelora Sriwijaya Palembang.

In Jakarta, competition venues will be centered in Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK). This stadium is the largest and oldest stadium in Indonesia which is very historic for the people of Indonesia which is located in the capital of Jakarta and has seating capacity of about 88 thousand spectators. Currently, Bung Karno Regions stood wide range of facilities for sporting activities in 36 Venues, Politics, Business, Recreation and Tourism.

SEA Games Organizing Committee or commonly abbreviated as INASOC stated there are four keys of success to be addressed during this Southeast Asia countries sport festival, that are the successful of achievement, successful of management, successful of legacy and that no less important is the successful of democratic economy.

For the SEA Games to be memorable especially for Indonesia and all participating countries, one of the impressions building efforts is done by specifying a logo that depicts Eagle with the philosophy of "Garuda Flight above Indonesia Nature?. As a symbol of the country, Garuda in the global sphere is well known and directly associated with Indonesia.

SEA Games Organizing Committee (INASOC) ensures that they will make the 26th SEA Games memorable also by choosing November 11, 2011 or 11/11/11 to hold the opening ceremony. SBY shocked at Australian news reports

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was shocked to read articles alleging his abuse of power as published not only by the Australian newspaper The Age, but also The Sydney Morning Herald, on Friday, a presidential spokesman said.
"The President was really shocked about the reports,” Julian Aldrin Pasha told tempointeraktif.com
Julian said that upon learning about the articles he immediately sent copies of the reports to Yudhoyono.
The reports were based on data from WikiLeaks, which quoted US diplomatic sources in Indonesia.
Based on data from leaked diplomatic cables, the reports said Yudhoyono had personally intervened to influence prosecutors and judges to protect corrupt political figures and put pressures on his adversaries.
In December 2004, for example, Yudhoyono allegedly ordered then deputy attorney general for special crimes Hendarman Supandji to stop investigating a corruption case involving the husband of former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Taufik Kiemas.
The newspapers also allege that Yudhoyono ordered former State Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Syamsir Siregar to spy on then law and human rights minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra when he made a secret trip to Singapore to meet a Chinese businessman.

Major Tsunami Damage In N. Japan after 8,9 Quake

Japan was struck by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, unleashing a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicenter. There were reports of injuries in Tokyo.

In various locations along Japan's coast, TV footage showed massive damage from the tsunami, with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters. A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK.

Officials were trying to assess damage, injuries and deaths from the quake but had no immediate details.

The quake that struck at 2:46 p.m. was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later. The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the strength of the first quake to a magnitude 8.9, while Japan's meteorological agency measured it at 7.9.

The meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific coast of Japan. NHK was warning those near the coast to get to safer ground.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.S. state of Hawaii.

The quake struck at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, the agency said. The area is 240 miles (380 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.

In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.

In central Tokyo, trains were stopped and passengers walked along the tracks to platforms.

The ceiling in Kudan Kaikan, a large hall in Tokyo, collapsed, injuring an unknown number of people, NHK said.

Footage on NHK from their Sendai office showed employees stumbling around and books and papers crashing from desks. It also showed a glass shelter at a bus stop in Tokyo completely smashed by the quake and a weeping woman nearby being comforted by another woman.

Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude one on Wednesday.

Thirty minutes after the quake, tall buildings were still swaying in Tokyo and mobile phone networks were not working. Japan's Coast Guard has set up task force and officials are standing by for emergency contingencies, Coast Guard official Yosuke Oi said.

"I'm afraid we'll soon find out about damages, since the quake was so strong," he said

Tottenham, Schalke reach Champions League quarters

Tottenham kept up its impressive debut in the Champions League by ousting AC Milan.
on Wednesday, while Felix Magath's future as Schalke coach remains uncertain despite the German side reaching the quarterfinals with a victory over Valencia.
Tottenham protected its 1-0 first-leg lead over seven-time European champion Milan by holding the Serie A leaders to a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane.
"It's a great achievement for this club to be in the last eight," Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said. "It's amazing what the players have done."
After drawing 1-1 in Spain, Schalke came from behind to beat Valencia 3-1.
Jefferson Farfan's 40th-minute free kick canceled out Ricardo Costa's opener for Valencia and Mario Gavranovic put the German side in front at the start of the second half. Farfan netted again in stoppage time.
Schalke went into the match amid reports the board will end Magath's contract at the end of the season.
"It doesn't interest us, and it shouldn't interest us. The truth was plain to see on the field," Magath, who is under contract until the end of the 2012-13 season, said after the game. "I plan to continue my work until 2013."
Since winning the trophy in 2007, Milan has been eliminated in the last-16 phase by Premier League teams in three of four seasons.
"This year something should have changed because we have played some good football apart from the first half of the first leg," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said through a translator. "I feel bitter, I have regrets for myself, the players and the club."
Milan's best chance was in the 25th minute, when Alexandre Pato rounded goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and crossed to Robinho, whose shot glanced off Benoit Assou-Ekotto and was cleared off the goal line by William Gallas.
Tottenham struggled to find the space to provide any threat. Rafael van der Vaart shot wide after two minutes, sent a free kick over on the half-hour and fired a low shot at Christian Abbiati - Tottenham's only shot on target.
But Spurs clung on to advance further in their first appearance in Europe's top competition since the 1961-62 season when they reached the semifinals.
"It's a huge night for us," said Tottenham forward Peter Crouch, who scored in the first leg. "We defended magnificently. We had to dig in and defend from the front, and we deserved it over the two legs."
Although Schalke has had an inconsistent season in the Bundesliga and is only 10th, it is also in the final of the German Cup and has now reached the Champions League quarterfinals for the second time since 2008 when it was ousted by Barcelona.
Costa headed Valencia ahead, connecting with a cross from Mehmet Topal, who easily shook off Joel Matip.
But the equalizer came when Farfan curled in a free kick from 18 meters (yards) after Gavranovic had been brought down.
"We tried to play attacking football from the start but we were tense," Magath said. "After falling behind, we had nothing to lose."
Gavranovic put Schalke ahead after a cross from Peer Kluge was poorly cleared by goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. Farfan picked up the ball and shot at the goal, Guaita dropped it and Gavranovic pounced. The ball bounced off the inside of the post and across the line.
Farfan struck again four minutes into stoppage time, chipping the ball past Guaita into the far corner to finish off another counterattack.
"With everything in our favor we managed to throw it all away - it's incomprehensible," Valencia coach Unai Emery said. "At 0-1 we had the game under control with chances to counterattack, and then they go and equalize. In the second half, without hardly creating a chance, they go 2-1 up. We then have four chances and don't take any of them. We've lost unjustly, we let an opportunity slip from our grasp when everything was in our favor."
On Tuesday, Barcelona and Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk also advanced.
Next Tuesday, Real Madrid hosts Lyon following a 1-1 draw in France and Chelsea plays FC Copenhagen with a 2-0 lead from the first leg in Denmark.
On Wednesday, Manchester United is home against Marseille after a 0-0 away draw and Bayern Munich hosts defending champion Inter Milan in a reprise of last year's final. The German club won the first leg 1-0.

Kuyt hat trick gives Liverpool 3-1 win over United

Dirk Kuyt scored a hat trick as Manchester United's title challenge was dealt a major setback after a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Kuyt put the home side in control late in the first half with goals in the 34th and 39th minutes before scoring his third in the 65th.
Substitute Javier Hernandez scored a consolation goal for the visitors in stoppage time.
With nine games remaining, United still tops the standings with 60 points, but Arsenal, who have a game in hand, are second with 57.
Andy Carroll, Liverpool's record ]35 million ($56 million) signing from Newcastle in January, made his debut when he came on as a 74th-minute substitute.
After its midweek loss to Chelsea, United has lost back-to-back league games for the first time in two years.
